PM Modi Attends Maldives’ 60th Independence Day as Chief Guest

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday attended the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations as the chief guest, marking a significant moment in India-Maldives relations. The island nation rolled out a ceremonial welcome for the visiting leader, reflecting the warmth of bilateral ties rooted in history, culture, and strategic partnership.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi announced a substantial loan package of ₹4,850 crore to support Maldives’ development projects and gifted 72 military vehicles to enhance the nation’s defense and disaster-response capabilities. These measures, officials said, are aimed at boosting cooperation in security, infrastructure, and humanitarian assistance.

Addressing the gathering, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to being the Maldives’ “first responder” during crises, citing India’s role in assisting the island nation during natural disasters, health emergencies, and humanitarian challenges.

“The relationship between India and Maldives is built on mutual trust, shared history, and common aspirations for peace and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region,” Modi said in his remarks at the ceremonial event.

The visit holds major strategic significance, coming at a time when external influences—particularly China’s growing presence in the Indian Ocean—have raised security concerns. By strengthening defense cooperation and extending financial support, India aims to reinforce its role as a reliable partner in the Maldives’ growth and stability.

The day concluded with a state banquet and cultural performances, celebrating not only six decades of Maldivian independence but also the deepening ties between New Delhi and Malé.
